@lynseyaddario photographed Eman Mohammad draping a thin scarf over her daughter’s head one Sunday morning in November — folding, tucking and pinning until it covered her hair without a strand showing. Bayan, 10, attends the Islamic school at a mosque in Toronto. For now, it’s the only time each week that she wears a headscarf. When they moved to Canada with their 4 children last winter, Eman and her husband, Syrian refugees, braced themselves for the hostility that so many refugees have encountered around the world. Instead, they found a national movement to aid them. Everyday citizens, called private sponsors, adopted the newcomers, donating their time and money to help guide them through their first year. The Mohammads are astonished and grateful. But over 10 months, the relationship has been reshaping the family, rewriting roles and rules they had always followed. At Islamic school, Bayan studies written Arabic, verses of the Quran and Islamic values with other children. But it isn’t clear how much the class is going to do to help secure her identity. “Every day I have this dilemma,” Eman said. “Am I letting the kids do the right thing?” Visit the link in our profile to read more.
