The journey to the Libyan border from Agadez, Niger, is 250 miles long. In all, it takes 3 days. No one knows how many die along the way. Those who venture a journey across the Mediterranean take a deadly gamble, too. Among the more than 4,700 people who have died trying to cross the Central Mediterranean so far in 2016, most can’t be identified. Of those who can, Africans make up the largest share. “The migrant road,” said a man who manages a smugglers’ den in Agadez, “is a road on fire.” @joshhaner took this photo of migrants on the back of a pickup truck on the desert roads outside Agadez — a trip that can cost 350,000 CFAs, or about $600.
