Mountain hare portrait – This image was captured one day as I headed up into the Cairngorms mountains on the look-out for ptarmigan. This hare was tucked down among some rocks but with little snow cover the hares surroundings were quite patchy and messy. As is always the case with backgrounds, if they add something to the image then include them but if they detract then try to exclude them. I went for the latter and simply concentrated on producing some tight compositions, such was the approachable nature of this most confiding of hares. It is the symmetry in this image that most appeals to me and it was another of those situations where I simply committed to the shot. I didn’t feel that there was much merit in working from either side of the hare as that simply started to introduce a cluttered, messy background into the image so I stayed where I was and then simply waited for the right moment to capture the image.
