Red fox sleeping – During my 15 years as a professional wildlife photographer I have only ever worked with wild birds and mammals. In the early days that was an unusual stance and I was forever being told by the great and the good within the business that I’d have to work with captive species if I wanted to survive. There was one person however, one of the true greats of wildlife photography, that at the time had never worked with captive subjects and that was @thomasdmangelsen. A former winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year he was, and remains, a true inspiration, not only for the work that he has produced over the years but also the way that he has gone about his work, with compassion, honesty and integrity. That’s not to say that I have any great ethical problem with people who do choose to work captive subjects, far from it but for me honesty has always been the bedrock of my own work and as such it’s what I admire most in other photographers. If an image is of a captive animal then be honest and say so. If the image is of a habituated, urban animal, like this one is, then the same applies. Likewise if an image that you capture is inspired by the work of another then I again think that the honourable and respectful approach is to always namecheck them. This image then is of a fox from Formby Point in Liverpool where I used to go to photograph a small colony of red squirrels. I could see straight away that the fox was used to people and after he’d made his daily rounds of the car park, scrounging whatever tit-bits he could lay his paws on, he would head back into the forest for a sleep. Living in the countryside as I’m lucky enough to do I’ve never met an urban fox since so it was nice to be able to capture some unusually intimate images of these often wary mammals.
