In this small Alaskan village, you don’t need to be a prophet to predict the imminent dangers of climate change. Shaktoolik, which is laid out on a narrow spit of sand, is facing an imminent threat from increased flooding and erosion, signs of a changing climate. The village, where the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @joshhaner took this photo of a discarded toy snowmobile, is losing an estimated 38,000 square feet a year. And it isn’t alone. With its proximity to the Arctic, Alaska is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the U.S. Alaskan villages like this one face a stark choice: Spend millions on a move, or stand their ground. At least 2 villages farther up the western coast have voted to relocate. A third, farther south, has taken the first steps toward a move.
