This is Roberto Bitsch, a gaucho who works at Estancia Por Fin, a ranch in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. It’s rare to find gauchos — South American cowboys and shepherds — as young as Roberto. At 24, he has a wife and child in the town of Porvenir, about 90 miles from Estancia Por Fin. Although young people are increasingly leaving the Tierra del Fuego islands, which can be found at the tip of South America, Roberto gave up jobs in the city working at a disco and selling cars to live the solitary life of a #gaucho. Roberto, who was trained to break wild horses at a rodeo, said he was first drawn to the grasslands by a love of horses. But it was a love of solitude that made him a gaucho. Visit the link in our profile to see photos by the photographer Tomas Munita, who first traveled to Tierra del Fuego 3 years ago and then again this fall, when he took this photo. #nytweekender #?
