For a long time, the British-Nigerian actor David Oyelowo didn’t want to play Othello. He loved Shakespeare, but the roles that excited him were Coriolanus, Macbeth, Henry V. Not the Moor. “I don’t want to do anything that feels pedestrian or obvious,” David told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. But the 40-year-old actor changed his mind. Beginning Tuesday, David will play the title role in @nytw79’s modern-dress production of #Othello. What convinced him to take the role? David began to feel that Othello — Shakespeare's brilliant general, both honored and mistrusted by the Venetian state — would offer him the chance to explore “what it means to be celebrated on the basis of your talent but to be derided on the basis of your color,” he said. The photographer @ryanpfluger took this portrait of #DavidOyelowo while on #nytassignment in New York.
