“We got the Hillary Clinton doll sometime last spring,” Jesse Wegman wrote this weekend in #NYTOpinion. “My wife saw it in the window of a toy store in our neighborhood and thought it would be amusing to give to our 2-year-old daughter, Sami.” For a while, his daughter loved the doll, photographed here in Prospect Park by @hlswift. First she called it Blue Baby, Jesse wrote, and when her language got better, Hilly Kinton. Then she lost interest. But on the morning of November 9, Jesse recalled, Sami sat down on the living room rug and, for a very long time, just stared at the doll. All morning, she refused to let go. “When she got bored with breakfast,” Jesse wrote, “she cranked Hilly Kinton’s arms straight up and ran back and forth holding her aloft. ‘She’s flying, Dada!’ she said. ‘Hilly Kinton flying!’ ” That morning, Jesse felt lucky. “I didn’t have to explain reality to Sami,” ” he wrote. “In fact, she got to explain it to me. For her, Hilly Kinton is not just doing O.K. She is flying.”
