Ashley MacIsaac is a virtuoso of traditional Cape Breton fiddling, which arrived on this Nova Scotia island with Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlanders 2 centuries ago. The immigrants brought with them the rich culture that had embroidered their otherwise stark lives: bagpipe and fiddle music, step dance and song. Scottish Cape Bretoners kept those traditions alive, passing them from generation to generation. In Scotland, meanwhile, the music evolved, blending with classical styles. Irish music eventually dominated Celtic music, thanks to the larger and later Irish diaspora, among other things. Cape Breton’s music is on full display in the fall during the annual Celtic Colours International Festival, when the island comes alive with fiddle music and step dancing, community suppers and singing — about 350 energetic events crowded into a little more than a week. The photographer @ianwillms took this photo of Ashley in October. Visit the link in our profile to see our 360° video of Cape Breton fiddling.
