My parents fled medical university in Afghanistan during the Cold War with Russia circa the ‘80s because they could not stand the violence around them that was consuming the country. I'm talking sleeping in barns overnight & working janitorial jobs in an Italian McDonald's just to get enough money to get to the next country, with America being the beacon of light at the end of their journey. They have taught me lessons beyond words (English, Farsi, or otherwise) and values that can only come from experience. In my eyes, they've always been super heroes. Being a first generation American to me means making all my parents' struggles worth it and embracing the differences in my upbringing from those around me.
