Photo by @FransLanting While working in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, I wanted to create an image that bridged the transition from darkness to day, using elephants and doves as symbols for both. By reducing the elephants in the background to elementary shapes and selectively illuminating one dove with a hand-held fill flash, I was able to suggest both the primeval quality of the African night and the bright moment of the day’s return--an idea that ultimately succeeded in only a single frame. Botswana is one of the few countries in the world where elephants are doing well, thanks to the Botswana government and its leadership. However in most of Africa, elephants are under siege. Their populations are declining at alarming rates due to the poaching crisis.
