Photo and caption by @petekmuller. A lioness and her two cubs take refuge from the sun in a dry streambed in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Game Reserve. The Mara is arid at this time of year, a factor that accentuates the inherently harsh social interplay on the savanna. Like all other resources, access to water becomes subject to rigid hierarchy with hyenas displacing wildebeests, elephants displacing hyenas and so on. On this trip, as I observed the animals, I wondered often about fear as a self-preservation mechanism and how that contributes to the collective personality of various species. The small and diminutive dik-dik, for example, are a coveted and largely defenseless snack for an array of predators on the plains. Given their vulnerability, they appear to be a rather neurotic animal; skittish, righteously paranoid and quick to flight. The lion, by contrast, fears nothing but other lions, a dynamic that allows for a fairly cool collective persona. With few worries, the formidable lion can sleep between 15-20 hours each day.
