Here's Ed Ruscha's stunning "Really Old"' from 2016; one of fifteen sublime paintings that make up his exhibition "Ed Ruscha: Extremes and In-betweens" at Gagosian Grosvenor Hill, London. The show is just the most elegant congregation of works that chronicle the passage of life, time and experience. In this work 'REALLY OLD' becomes the zenith (yet, ironically, the nadir) of an isosceles triangle. Half way up (or down) the canvas Ruscha has painted "1/2 way". The bottom of the canvas thus becomes both its aesthetic point of departure as well as signifying the beginning of life's journey from innocence to experience; from the bliss of ignorance to the the responsibility of knowledge. From youth to age. All the canvases have these crescendoes of text, amplified, then diminishing in turn, as a way of scaling our lives. Where it starts. When it ends. All are executed on these powdery, sophisticated, achingly chic grounds. This show is just a knock out; the artist, turning 80 next year, and likely looking at his life's accomplishments, has compounded nearly all his creative enterprises of the past 60 years (form, technique, the marriage of Sign and Signifier; the synthesis of text and Image) in to this gloriously effortless body of work.
