The sunrise was gorgeous and the sea was flat calm, but at 78 degrees North there should have been a lot more sea ice on the Arctic Ocean when we crossed from Svalbard to Greenland. Instead all that we saw were small chunks of ice. According to some predictions, the Arctic Ocean may become ice-free in summer during the next few decades. That is a scary prospect for everyone and everything that depends on sea ice to survive—from polar bears to seals to Inuit people.
