Often referred to as "LACMA’s Big Rock," "Levitated Mass" has become a fixture on campus since its installation in June 2012. The work consists of a 340-ton boulder affixed above a concrete trench—first conceived by land artist Michael Heizer in 1968, but attempts to construct it using a 120-ton boulder were abandoned. Heizer discovered a new, larger rock in 2006 at Stone Valley Quarry in Riverside County that was just right for the project, so work began to bring it to LACMA.
