A Leatherback Sea Turtle emerges from its nest under the beach sand on the island of St. Croix in the Caribbean Sea. This turtle’s mother laid a clutch of eggs 60 days earlier and now they are hatching. Researchers believe that perhaps only 1 out of every 1,000 hatchlings will reach maturity due to the many threats that they face; some natural, some anthropogenic (caused by humans). Little is known about the lives of these animals once they enter the sea, as they might only be seen again decades later. It’s believed that females reach maturity between the age of 20-30 and when ready to lay eggs, return to nest on the same beaches where they were hatched.
Leatherbacks have a linage that dates back more than 100 million years, yet today face serious threats to their survival. Conservation efforts, such as the ones on St. Croix, are having a positive effect. Coverage from an upcoming story in @ナショナルジオグラフィック about special marine habitats within US waters.
