Photo by @FransLanting //To capture scenes from the African night I rigged up a remote camera system along a trail frequented by big cats in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert. It consisted of an infrared triggering device connected to a camera with three strobes. Plexiglass boxes protected the hardware from the gnawing teeth of hyenas, and each was staked to prevent animals like monkeys from taking off with anything. The system worked on paper, but in the field it was not easy to operate. Once, while feverishly replacing sync cords as darkness enveloped me, I was warned by a lion’s growl that it was time to move. Many of the images I captured were as dark as the African night itself. But on one frame, frozen in time, was the face of a leopard. I had heard this cat in the night and found its tracks around my tent in the morning, but I never laid eyes on it. To me this image reflects the starkness of an encounter between a wild animal and a camera sensor, with no human emotion in between to embellish the view. Follow me@FransLanting to see more big cats from around the world.
