Inferno ~ Veiled in smoke, a sulfur miner at the base of the caldera collecting hot sulfur that flows from within Mount Ijen in East Java, Indonesia.

While working on the Volcano Gods story for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, I wanted to highlight both the spiritual side of a culture where many believe are the belly buttons of the earth, volcanoes, also the economic of these powerful navels of our planet. Volcanoes not only take and are mystifying, they give. In this case, sulfur, collected within Mount Ijen, an active stratovolcano located on the far eastern side of Java, Indonesia.

Incredibly difficult labor, these men and women work within this sulfur spewing natural wonder trying to make a living for their families.
