More than 100,000 people have sought refuge in IDP camps in Kachin State since fighting resumed between government forces and the Kachin Independence Army on June 9, 2011, ending a 17-year ceasefire. There are more than 160 IDP camps and settlements in Kachin State and neighbouring Shan State, including about 25 in and around Myitkyina, most of which are supported by the Kachin Baptist Convention. About half of the camps, housing about 40,000 people, are in areas under KIA control along the border with China, where food security for the IDPs is a problem because of restrictions on access. After languishing in the camps for up to five years with limited opportunities to support themselves, many IDPs have become disillusioned but they fear returning to their homes because of the security situation and the presence of landmines. #Myanmar #Kachin #IDP #MagnumFoundation #EmergencyFund #MagnumPhotos #cccontheroad
