A Shortfin Mako Shark in New Zealand swims towards surface waters in the afternoon light. Makos are one of the fastest fish in the sea, capable of bursts up to 60 mph. Of all shark species they also feature one of the largest brains, relative to body size. The number of Makos has declined worldwide due to overfishing and the demand for shark fins. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species.
