Photo by @newshatavakolian // A couple gazes over Iran's Lake Urmia, once one of the largest salt lakes in the world, now mostly a dried up desert of dust and salt holding only 10% the water it held just two decades ago. Ships filled with tourists once plied the waters here, in search of flocks of migrating flamingos. Now the remaining water, warmed by the summer heat and saturated with high concentrations of salt, has turned red. The color change is probably caused by the Dunaliella algae, which can turn water blood-red. Efforts are made to save the lake, to return Urmia to its former glory. But many locals fear it may be too late. #onassignment #Iran #Climatechange
