The Museum’s world-class vertebrate paleontology collection contains about 1 million specimens of which only a small fraction—0.02%—is on view at any time. The rest is stored behind the scenes in spaces like the aptly named Big Bone Room, pictured here. Its largest holding is the 650-pound (295-kg) thighbone of the long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur Camarasaurus. Most of the bones are too large or too fragile to be displayed, but they’re available for research purposes to paleontologists who come the Museum from around the world.
