photo by @Joel Sartore | This Chihuahua fairy shrimp is a female with eggs, and she's in a race against time: these small shrimp hatch from dry eggs when seasonal rains fill temporary playas, vernal pools, rainwater basins, even roadside ditches. They grow rapidly, with some species reaching maturity in two or three days, and must mate and produce eggs before the basin dries. There, the eggs lie in the dry dirt, awaiting the next rainfall, which in some areas, may not occur for years.

This is one of more than 300 fairy shrimp species that live in seasonal wetlands around the world.  While the Chihuahua fairy shrimp emerges with summer rains, others may occur in the same pool, only hatching with the winter snow melt. As many as eight fairy shrimp species may occur in one basin, each with different seasonal hatching requirements. Though most are less than an inch long, these shrimp are a vital food resource for migrating water birds such as ducks and shorebirds. #photoark #photooftheday
