Happy birthday to Mary Shelley, born in London on this day in 1797. Shelley is best known for her horror novel “Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus” (1818). The novel emphasizes the fragility and vulnerability of Frankenstein’s monster; as the creature explains to his creator in a climactic confrontation, “I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.” As evidenced by the many depictions in his collection, Guillermo Del Toro has long been fascinated by Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. -
