#MariaMitchell (August 1, 1818 - June 28, 1889) was America's first female astronomer. At 29, with a two inch telescope she became the first person to discover a telescopic comet. In 1865 she was hired by Vassar college to teach astronomy but the collegiate handbook forbade female students from going outside after dark. Her life was devoted to breaking out of cultural constraints for the advancement of women in science. She said: "No woman should say, 'I am but a woman' But a woman!
