The Celtic cross atop New York’s Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (@fapc_nyc) soars 286 feet above the ground. Earlier this month, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter David Dunlap climbed an open-air stairway to visit the cross, which is being restored, along with the church itself. The original plan for the $9 million project didn’t include the cross, which is 10 feet tall and made of 8-inch-wide bronze plates treated with gold leaf. But after work began last summer, elements of the cross’s support structure were found to be badly rusting. While there was no imminent threat that the cross would topple, the church decided to address the problem while it was already cocooned in scaffolding. @damonwinter photographed the cross, which was first installed in the early 1960s. The restoration is to be finished in October.
