A leatherback turtle hatchling crawls towards the sea at sunset on the island of St. Croix in the Caribbean Sea. Researchers believe that perhaps only 1 out of every 1000 hatchlings will reach maturity due to the many threats they face; some natural, some anthropogenic (caused by humans). Little is known about the lives of these animals as, once they enter the sea, they may only be seen again decades later. It’s believed that females reach maturity between the age of 20-30 and when ready to lay eggs, they return to nest on the same beaches where they were hatched. Leatherbacks have a linage that dates back more than 100 million years, yet today these animals face serious threats to their survival. Conservation efforts, such as the ones on St. Croix, are having a positive effect. Coverage from an upcoming story in @ナショナルジオグラフィック Magazine about special marine habitats within US waters.
