? This is our 39th white-naped crane chick hatched at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. The chick is the seventh for our female Walnut, but the chick is being reared by surrogate parents. Walnut is imprinted on humans and unable to breed naturally as a result. She came to SCBI as an extremely genetically valuable crane with no offspring. Our keepers have been able to successfully artificially inseminate her, and give her chicks to surrogate white-naped crane pairs. Now her genes won’t disappear from the white-naped crane population in human care. #WeSaveSpecies
