@yahoo's era of uncertainty came to a close today after @verizon announced plans to acquire the internet giant for $4.8 billion.

Why did Verizon make the deal? Digital advertising assets and Yahoo’s vast user base. "Yahoo gives us scale and that's what's most critical here. We go from being in the millions of audience to the billions," Marni Walden, Verizon president of product innovation and new businesses, told CNBC. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer defended the company's achievements during her four years at the helm, saying she did not view the sale of its operating business to Verizon as a failure.
