#Kindergarten graduates struck a pose after a ceremony in Baishizhou, a densely packed tenement village in the heart of Shenzhen, one of southeastern China’s surging metropolises. The days are numbered for this teeming neighborhood of 150,000, which is actually an organic conglomerate of 5 smaller urban villages. Government officials in #China, eager to modernize and redevelop, see these places as dirty and backward, and as a result, in #Shenzhen, the villages have been disappearing one by one to make room for lucrative and gleaming commercial and residential developments. Preparations for Baishizhou’s impending destruction have already begun. Last year, a long concrete wall about 6 feet high was erected along the village’s main road, hiding the area marked for demolition and diverting foot traffic away from the shops that have stubbornly remained open.
