Amid the white clothing and quiet cordiality at the World Croquet Federation’s world championships in April, one player stood out. At 15, Edmund Fordyce has already won several tournaments and awards in his native New Zealand. But it isn’t just his age and talent that make Edmund such a captivating player: His success and renown have grown as he has battled congenital heart disease that has led to 8 heart-related operations. The most recent was last August, after Fordyce went to the hospital with what he thought was a cold. It turned out he was experiencing heart failure, a condition that required the installation of his 5th pacemaker and the replacement of a heart valve. “After every surgery, I always want to get back into it,” Edmund said. “I’ll always play it unless I get to the point where I can’t physically play it.” @scottymacphoto photographed Edmund in April during the #croquet championship in West Palm Beach, Florida.
