What you need to understand about Chuck Close — one of the world’s most celebrated painters, a master of the modern portrait whose work is displayed in the great museums — is that nobody saw it coming, Wil S. Hylton writes in this week’s issue of @nytmag. Will isn’t simply referring to Chuck’s recent focus on death and urge toward self-portraiture. The artist’s divorce from his wife, Leslie, after 43 years of marriage was also unexpected, as was his bewildering decision to move to Long Beach and Miami, leaving much of his old life behind. “What I mean,” Wil writes, “is the combination of all these things into a period of metamorphic transition here at the end of a legendary life.” The @Magnum Photos photographer @christopherandersonphoto, who took this portrait of #ChuckClose, called his @nytmag assignment "terrifying." After all, his 76-year-old subject knows a thing or two about portraiture. Visit the link in our profile to read more about the mysterious metamorphosis of Chuck Close.
