French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat was stabbed to death in his bathtub on this day in 1793 by 24-year old political rival Charlotte Corday. She stayed at the scene after he bled out and was detained, tried, convicted and executed in less than a week. Marat was working at the time of the attack, and the original letter, with blood and water stains, still survives. In English the letter painted by Jacques Louis-David, depicted here, says, “Given that I am unhappy, I have a right to your help." David was a supporter of Marat and had in fact had visited his residence the night before the assassination.
