Chen Haoru is part of a wave of architects who have turned their attention to China’s other frontier: the rural outback. “10 years ago, there weren’t that many opportunities to do projects in the countryside,” Haoru told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “All of the focus was on the cities. There was no interest in the rural areas.” Several factors have combined to create opportunities for such projects: Restrictions on the transfer of rural land have been relaxed, urban residents have become increasingly interested in rural lifestyles and organic farming, and domestic tourism is booming. The photographer @lamyikfei photographed Chen Haoru at the Sun Commune, Haoru’s thriving eco-farm about 60 miles from the eastern Chinese city of #Hangzhou.
