Taking the form of a sea serpent, a common loon glides effortlessly across a glassy lake surface. Every other minute, the loon would send out a lingering call as it searched the lake for its mate. Loons are an extremely territorial bird and will defend an area of water from other loons. Generally a small lake, such as this, will only have one nesting pair of loons while larger lakes can have many nests across the shore. I was hoping to see the pair's chicks, but my guess was that they either hadn't hatched yet or were too young to take to the water with their parents. #loon #banff #wildlife #nature #animals #birds #nationalpark #birdwatching
