Heading back to Pendleton Prison in Indiana, flying into Chicago's O'hare Airport, looking toward the city's South Side as neighborhood fireworks burst below me and over it. But the gunpowder isn't only aimed skyward. Last year in Chicago, 10 people were killed and 55 wounded over July 4th weekend; as of this morning, 2 killed - 34 wounded. War zone shit. President Obama claims Chicago as his hometown. Early on, out of political fear of the optics, it seems, he didn't focus on violence and the cycle of poverty & crime in American inner cities as fiercely as he might have. For him and for America, much work remains. From the musical, Washington's words to Hamilton: "history has its eyes own you." History has its eyes on us, too.
