From the pulpit of a boat, fisheries biologist Dr. Greg Skomal works to gather underwater video footage of a Great White Shark off of Chatham, Massachusetts. The video is used to identify individual animals as part of a population study that will determine how many White Sharks are frequenting this region. Since 2009, White Sharks have been increasing in numbers here, attracted by the growing number of Gray Seals in these waters. The sharks typically arrive in June and stay through early November. Centuries ago, seal populations were large in this area, but numbers were reduced in the 1600’s by sealers. Since the creation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972, seal populations have been steadily increasing. The situation off Cape Cod today may be returning to as it once was hundreds of years ago, prior to hunting.
