Photo by @FransLanting Nature’s fireworks: Lava explodes from a cone inside the crater of Pu’u ‘O’o, the active vent of the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. With a team of geologists, I hiked to the rim of the volcano and looked over a scene from a primordial planet. A roiling lake of liquid lava filled the inside of the crater. Craggy vents belch fountains of red-hot molten rock from deep inside the Earth.
