Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Grotta Cassone is a very straight 246m (750ft) tunnel that formed within the lava flow of 1792, beneath the southern flank of Mount Etna in Sicily. The striking dark black basaltic rocks are over 8m (25ft) high in some places and up to 10m (30ft) wide. The lava that has solidified on the floor has a corded, rippled texture.
We came here to create a high precision 3D map of the cave. There are many lava tubes that have been discovered on Mount Etna as a result of road construction on the volcano.
