It’s the most dangerous of all the honey cliffs because the #bamboo ladder hangs too far from the hive for the hunters to reach it. This leaves only one option – they must step off the ladder and #freesolo rock climb to reach the hive – all while being swarmed and stung by bees. ~ Maule looks tired. His eyes are hooded and his face is still swollen from all the stings he got harvesting the first two cliffs. A long and animated discussion, fueled by battered plastic jugs of raksi – the local millet-based moonshine - lasts well into the night. The hunt is on, off, on, off, on, off. ~ The next morning, our last day in Sadhi, we wake up to a monsoonal rain. The steep jungle approach to the top of the cliff will be treacherous in these conditions. Word arrives that the honey hunters are back into the raksi. No one is going anywhere. ~ We’re rationalizing the wisdom of quitting while one’s ahead when there’s a commotion outside the hut. The rain has stopped and the honey hunters have decided to go for it - but on one condition: we can observe from afar, but no one but Maule and his trusty assistant Asdhan will be allowed down on the cliff. ~ The moment pictured here was captured a few hours later by a @GoPro that Renan mounted on Maule’s bamboo honey pole. Hundreds of feet above the deck, with no safety system whatsoever, Maule and Asdhan cling to the vertical wall with one hand while they harvest the honey with the other. ~ When the hunt is over, we all trudge slowly back to the village in the rain. A bottle of raksi makes the rounds. No one mentions what we’re all thinking: that we’ve just witnessed Maule’s last honey hunt – and with it, the end of an era. ‘Who will pick up his torch now?’ I wonder.
