Today, May 30, Mars makes its closest approach to Earth in 11 years! At 5:35 PM ET, Mars will be the closest it has been to Earth since October 5, 2005: 46.8 million miles (75.3 million kilometers). Mars is currently retrograding in apparent sky motion relative to background stars, as Earth catches up with the slower orbiting planet. Mars is now vivid in the night sky, appearing about as bright as Jupiter for the first time in a decade, distinctive by its rusty color. By mid-June, Mars will become fainter as the two planets travel farther away from each other in their orbits.
