The naturalist, explorer, taxidermist, and conservationist Carl Akeley was born on May 19, 1864. Considered the "father of modern taxidermy,” Akeley developed a highly sculptural technique that is still considered the modern standard. See his works on display in the Akeley Hall of African Mammals.
