Workers load recently cut sugarcane onto a truck near the town of Viejo in Chinandega, Nicaragua on Jan. 6, 2015.

Climate change is making the lives of sugarcane workers in Central America more perilous as temperatures rise and droughts increase. Over 20,000 men and women who worked in the cane fields have died from Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu) in the past 10 years alone. Dehydration and severe heat exposure are believed to be the leading causes of CKDu, so the changing climate has the potential to make any already-bad situation worse. This is a perfect example of how the world’s most vulnerable people are also the most exposed to the effects of climate change. #climatchange #everydayclimatechange #climatechangeisreal #climate #globalwarming
