Photo by @renan_ozturk // caption by @m_synnott - On April 25, 2015, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, the Kulung Rai of the Hongu Valley were fortunate. Not a single life was lost. The damage, however, was profound. It is estimated that 70% of homes in the area were damaged, many irreparably. ~
The real impact, however, came months afterward when monsoon rains caused devastating landslides - one of which blocked the Hongu River entirely. The river stopped running for the first time anyone can remember, and a profound silence fell over the valley. Local residents fled for higher ground. When the blockage finally burst, a 20-foot high wall of water surged down valley like a tidal wave. Afterwards, the river was unrecognizable. ~
One year later, Maule Dhan and his team must find a new route to access one of their best honey cliffs. The landslide and its aftermath has wiped away their previous trail along the river bank and left a polished rock wall rising directly from the fast flowing green water. ~
Soon the valley is filled with the ring of khukuri knives chopping down bamboo, which is hauled to the river, dropped halfway across and jammed between two boulders. More lengths of bamboo are levered across to complete the span. Smaller pieces of bamboo are lodged vertically on the upstream side of the bridge, held in place by the strong current - forming the frame for a sturdy railing lashed in place with thin strands of bark. ~
In less than an hour, we're on our way forward - there is honey to be harvested and the time is now. ~
