Pearls are finished gems when found. Their beauty has been valued for centuries, but their popularity has varied over time. Lustrous pearls are are produced by mollusks having a nacreous (mother of pearl) lining in response to foreign irritants such as parasites or grains of sand. Layers upon layers of nacre are deposited on the object, forming a pearl's onion-like structure.
This adorned subject is Mary Ruthven, the wife of celebrated portraitists Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), whose work is the subject of an exhibition currently on view at The @frickcollection. See Van Dyck: The Anatomy of Portraiture now through June 5.
Thank you @frickcollection for the opportunity to experience #vanDyckattheFrick after-hours with fellow Museum colleagues, we had a blast!
