Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | The movie Star Wars seems to draw on WWI for its visual motifs. But the impact of WWI on our everyday lives goes far beyond its influence on science fiction movies. WWI gave birth to utopian illusions about the ability of science and modern progress to permanently eliminate war through the perfection of human nature itself. The past 100 years since WWI have been the bloodiest in human history and we wonder why? We’ve been stuck in 1919 and we don’t know it. Many of the answers to modern ills can be found in the ways that WWI make us vulnerable by reseting expectations about our ability to perfect the world. In the aftermath of WWI, we’ve become hooked on noble aspirations that feel good and feel moral, yet cut us off from the reality of human nature. Preventing future tragedies begins with a sober view about the dark side of human nature. Human decency, conscience and an appreciation of what’s human vs. what’s not are key to our survival as we move at light speed into a world where we become more and more reliant on machines and less and less reliant on other human beings.
