This is my father Charles Franti and me, right after he and my mom Carole Franti adopted me. He was born this day April 29th and would have been 83 today. Sadly he only lived to age 70. For much of my life we were not close, due in part to his long battle with alcoholism, but in the final four years of his life, after surviving a stroke and subsequent coma for 30 days, he blossomed into the most beautiful, kind and loving man I have known. He was complimentary to strangers, he showed concern for the weakest among us, he encouraged me to follow my own path with the disciplined work ethic he'd shown me through his example and he made amends to everyone he'd hurt through the years. He showed me that everyone has the ability to grow and evolve, even those we think are too far gone to ever come back. All of us have the capacity to be authentic, compassionate, loving people. The fact that he was willing to open his heart, his home, his life to a little boy who was a complete stranger tells it all. One time he told me that someone had approached him when I was a kid and asked him what he knew about raising a little African American boy, he said,"See my other kids over their playing with him in the sand? When they get hurt and come into the house crying I'm gonna hug them, fill their bucket back up with love, pat 'em on the butt and send 'em back out to play the same way I'll do for Michael, he's my son and that's the way I know how to do it." My dad wasn't always perfect, but he was filled with perfectly eloquent common sense and I'm incredibly grateful today for all that I learned from him and all the days he filled up my bucket. I wrote the song "IT'S NEVER TOO LATE (TO START THE DAY OVER)" for him. He never heard it in person, but sometimes I remember him and sing it to him when I'm alone. He played a big role in me being the person I am today, in that way his ripples live on. Love you dad! #adoption #father #son #birthday
