Today marks 36 years of #Independence in #Zimbabwe! Here's a photo of Bob performing at the inaugural celebrations back in 1980;

#HISTORY: Marley was invited to play at the ceremony after his song 'Zimbabwe' – proclaiming "every man got a right to decide his own destiny" – became the battle cry for the rebel soldiers during their fight for #freedom. When the young nation couldn't afford to transport Bob, his band, crew, and equipment over to #Africa, however, Marley was so honored by the invitation that he decided to fund the whole excursion himself. And when almost 2 million people showed up to catch a glimpse of the #reggae icon at a stadium that only held 80,000, he gave a second free concert the next night for those who couldn't get in. #AfricaUnite #onelove
