“To finish a picture? What nonsense! To finish it means to be through with it, to kill it, to rid it of its soul.” —Pablo Picasso
On view at The #MetBreuer, “Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible” address a subject critical to artistic practice: the question of when a work of art is finished. This Cézanne painting is one of the 197 works, dating from the Renaissance to the present, in the exhibition. The artist left significant portions of this canvas unpainted and traces of the underdrawing visible. Today, scholars still cannot agree on whether the work is truly unfinished or exemplifies Cézanne’s intentional use of the “non finito” aesthetic. Paul Cézanne (French, 1839–1906). Gardanne, 1885–86. #TheMet #MetUnfinished #PaulCezanne
