A boy rested against a pole at a farmer’s market in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. According to @unitednations figures, #Afghanistan produces 90% of the world’s heroin — and more than two-thirds of that comes from Helmand’s opium poppies. This year’s first poppy harvest season has just begun, but because of Taliban advances and out-of-control corruption, there will be no serious efforts to eradicate the opium crop. This #nytweekender, we’ll be sharing more scenes that @adamfergusonphoto captured while on assignment in #HelmandProvince, the world capital of opium and heroin production and the deadliest province in Afghanistan.
